Principal's Corner

Principal's Message

Welcome to Garfield Elementary, a community of learners. Our community is made up of good families, great staff members and terrific students. We are proud to say that we are a “School of Promise.”  Our preschool program recently received a 5 star rating based on Step Up To Quality (SUTQ), guidelines determined by the Ohio Department of Education.  This is the highest rating possible.

The school curriculum targets the needs of every child through our “Success For All” reading program, differentiated instruction and technology. Our philosophy is to prepare the whole child to be a positive, contributing member of the ever-changing world we live in today.  This year we have decided to change our homework format.  Instead of all kids having 20 minutes of homework nightly, homework will only be given a couple evenings a week.  Our staff has committed to help our families by changing their schedules, so as to provide additional help during the school day.  We also will be providing art instruction to our kids.  Miss Roth is our new Art teacher.  Three new parapros have joined our staff as well.  They are Mrs. Daisy Davidison, Mr. Mitchell McDowell and Mrs. Kimberly Little. We welcome them to our Garfield family and community.  Plans are presently underway for the development of an outdoor learning center, with hopes that construction will begin this spring.

Our students spend each day in an environment that is safe, filled with high expectations for learning, and know that they are cared about. Garfield elementary ROARS (this is our positive behavior support program whereby our kids learn to be Responsible, Organized, Achieve, Respectful and Safe).

Family and community involvement is welcome and encouraged. Our PTO is very active and volunteers are greatly encouraged to come and work with our students. It takes an entire village to care for our students.

Please feel free to call, stop by the office or e-mail me if you have any questions or concerns. I am grateful to have the opportunity to spend each day with the kids, families and staff.
